56 Leonard: stacked block building in Tribeca

I was walking around Tribeca for the first time in years and saw this stunning building: it juts into the downtown sky with what appears to be stacked blocks of steel and glass. It’s a new luxury condo building at 56 Leonard Street by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, based in Basel. It’s a 60 story building with a specially commissioned work by sculptor Anish Kapoor at its base (which I didn’t get a chance to see on this day).

56 Leonard looks like incredible New York City dream, but only for “The 1%,” as my research indicates that sales for the condos ranged in price from $3,175,000 to $17,750,000, with an average of $4,786 per square foot! But can you imagine being 40-60 stories high in New York City with glass walls and views like this?

Here’s another view (below) from my walk around Tribeca. People are calling it a “Jenga” tower, after the popular block building game. I just think it’s amazing, no matter what you want to call it.
