I had to drive my kid to summer camp in the Catskills and decided to take a round-about way home in the hope of finding an arts adventure. I’ve been through most of the towns along the Hudson River, so I decided to look for a different route that would take me someplace new. Coming south from Neversink (NY), I took NY-55 West to NY-17 East and then NY-42 South which led me into Port Jervis, NY. I had just entered the western outskirts of town when I saw these metal sculpture animals on the side of the road … as soon as I drove past them, I knew I had to turn around and go back for a closer look.
They were positioned in front of a house, but I later found out that they belong to – and are the creation of – the owner of a lawn mower shop about 20 yards down the road, “John’s Mower Shop” of Port Jervis. The shop owner, John Eschenberg, welds these fantastic creatures in his free time and then sets them outside along the side of the road where I’m sure they grab everyone’s attention. At the time that I was there taking these pictures, I didn’t realize the animal sculptures belonged to the mower shop, so I didn’t go over there to investigate any further. Now I kind of wish I had asked around or gotten more information … I think it would be pretty cool to have one of these in my yard!
